Exploring Bisexuality in "Straight" Relationships with John-Paul Davies (Season 10 Finale!)
Epizode
It’s the season 10 finale! I can hardly believe it. This episode features the first half of an interview I did with John-Paul Davies – a psychotherapist, career-changer, author, and mental health commentator seen in media including the BBC, Psychologies Magazine, The Telegraph and The Independent – for his YouTube channel. We chatted mostly about being bisexual within straight-passing relationships, whether or not you have to explore sex outside the marriage in order to feel satisfied in a fluid identity, and other ways to integrate bisexuality into your life and relationship. The second half of this interview is available on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xChV83OD2XA And I highly recommend subscribing to John-Paul’s channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@JohnPaulDaviesTTP You can also learn more about John-Paul Davies and his therapy practice at his website: https://www.thistrustedplace.co.uk/ After that, I brought in my friend Clark Nesselrodt for a brief chat about the next season of Two Bi Guys – where he will fill in as my new, regular, second bi guy! We’ll be having an extended conversation all season long about sexual energy. It’s a new frontier for me and this podcast, and I hope you’ll join me for the ride… Finally, I share some information about my coaching practice, and stay tuned for some new offerings coming this fall. It's our 99th episode! (Maybe? Sort of? I haven't done the math...) And it's a great one. My guest Amanda Dames is a certified sex and relationship coach, former New York City dominatrix, and founder of The Kink Consultant. In this fascinating conversation, we explore the surprising overlaps between kink and bisexuality, plus we dive into shame, communication, and authentic self-expression. Amanda shares her journey from discovering her own kinky desires at a young age to becoming a coach who helps individuals and couples navigate kink and fetish without shame. We discuss how and why couples struggle when one partner has desires the other doesn't share, how fantasies can actually strengthen intimacy, and why trust, consent, and honest communication matter far more than any specific sexual interest. Whether you're kinky or not, this episode is about something bigger: learning to embrace the parts of ourselves we've been taught to hide. Welcome to the final installment of my three-part series on BFF, the biggest, best, biannual, bisexual play party in Palm Springs. Before we dive in, I share an important disclaimer: BFF isn't for everyone. While I've found it to be one of the most accepting, freeing, and healing communities I've ever experienced, it's also an intense, highly sexual environment. I talk about who it might be a great fit for, who it might not, and why I think it's important to know that going in. Then you'll hear two final interviews recorded at the event, followed by an extended conversation with Brad and Tracy, the couple who have organized BFF for nearly a decade. We talk about how the event began, how it's evolved over the past 20 years, and why the sense of community has always mattered even more than the sex. • Steve — Back for his second appearance on the podcast, Steve reflects on another BFF weekend, why saying "no" can strengthen connection, and how kink and impact play have become an important part of his journey. • Drew — Drew shares his path through bisexuality, polyamory, and building relationships rooted in communication, honesty, and community. We also talk about coming out, finding your people, and why authentic connection matters more than simply having sex. • Brad & Tracy — The longtime organizers of BFF share how they stumbled into the event 20 years ago, eventually took it over, and have worked to preserve its uniquely welcoming spirit. We also explore bisexual visibility, the evolution of the swinging community, and why spaces where people can fully be themselves are more important than ever. (There's no video for this series, but the audio is definitely explicit.) If you'd like to attend BFF, you can reach out directly to Brad at his profile "CUTEONES" on Kasidie, SDC or Lifetylelounge, or at "CUTEONES1" on SLS or Fetlife. Welcome back to part two of our three-part series on BFF, the biggest, best, biannual, bisexual play party in Palm Springs. A lot of play happens at this event, allowing attendees to embrace their desires, release shame, and connect authentically, but even more important is the atmosphere of acceptance, love, and learning from each other. There’s a lot of great and healing work being done at BFF! In this episode, you’ll hear seven more interviews from the event that range from sexy to sacred – and everything in between. · Jen — A bi activist who has been in the lifestyle since 2000 who explains why BFF is a big part of finally moving to California. · Mark — Back solo this year after last year's fan-favorite interview with his husband Josh, Mark talks about deepening his bi exploration and self-discovery. · An anonymous BFF newbie – attending only his second-ever play party, he shares what it's like to be new to both non-monogamy and bisexuality. · Dr. Laurie Bennett-Cook — Clinical sexologist and veteran BFFer, Laurie talks about the exploding demand for Bi+ events and how she and her husband navigated non-monogamy 25 years ago with no roadmap. · Lynn — A first-timer inspired to attend by her neighbor Don (from last year's episode), Lynn delivers some of the most moving reflections of the series on authenticity, shame, and the sacred energy of this community. · Piglet — A seven-time BFFer who hilariously narrates a live scene playing out nearby and reflects on how this community is generating happiness and positivity for the world. · Spencer — Another seven-time attendee, he shares his Arkansas coming-of-age story and his philosophy of being a quiet but open facilitator of others' journeys. There's no video for this series, but the audio is definitely explicit. Stay tuned for Part 3 — two more interviews plus an extended conversation with BFF organizers Brad and Tracy. If you'd like to attend BFF, you can reach out directly to Brad at his profile "CUTEONES" on Kasidie, SDC or Lifetylelounge, or at "CUTEONES1" on SLS or Fetlife. 75-minute initial deep-dive coaching session with Rob: https://calendly.com/robertbrookscohen/first-coaching-session-75-mins Learn more at www.robertbrookscohen.com Support this podcast: patreon.com/robertbrookscohen
Two Bi Guys is back! This is the first of three episodes I recorded at BFF — the Bi F*** Fest — a biannual, four-day play party in Palm Springs, centering bisexuality and especially bi men. I recorded these interviews in the pool on the last day, mic in hand, wandering around while people were doing... various things around me. It's that kind of episode. In a strange (or maybe perfect?) turn of events, I was at this BFF while on a plant medicine diet that called for no sex, no masturbation, no intentional raising of sexual energy. So I was very much a celibate voyeur at a bisexual orgy — and it gave me a different lens on the whole thing. The community, the storytelling, the emotional depth of what people shared — I absorbed all of it more than ever. This episode contains six interviews: · Shay and Scarlet — a married bi couple who came out to each other on the same night in 2017 at their local pub · Hannah— my friend who is literally the reason I ended up at this BFF despite the diet. A queer, sapphic woman who loves being in a space where masculinity is queer · Vinny and his partner — raised Catholic, overcoming shame, figuring out his attractions lean more toward women at about 80/20, and his female partner navigating what it means to really let him be himself · L and B — a younger couple, together 15 years, who opened up and discovered they were both bi. (And one of them can do pole tricks ;) · Jose— a psychiatrist who has been to BFF ten times and gave one of the most beautiful answers about what community means · Sean and Derek — Sean is 56, newly out as bi, and his friend Derek who has helped normalize the experience. Sean's story of how his wife paved the way and made his own coming easier — and why that made him feel guilty — is one of the most moving parts of this whole series Yes, there's a lot of sex at BFF. But what keeps people coming back — what made some of them cry talking to me — is feeling truly seen. The sex is the icing. The community is the cake. If you're curious about attending BFF, it's not something you can just Google. You can reach out directly to Brad, the organizer, at his profile "CUTEONES" on Kasidie, SDC or Lifetylelounge, or at "CUTEONES1" on SLS or Fetlife. There's no video for this series, but the audio is definitely explicit. Part 2 and Part 3 are coming soon! Think it's too late for you to come out? Have you ever let regret about the past get in the way of making empowering decisions for your future? We've all been there — but it's never too late to live your life authentically and intentionally. This week, I sit down with Doug Moffitt, who began exploring his sexuality — and his authentic self — in his 80s. After a lifetime of repression, Doug followed a sudden impulse to attend a gay men’s tantra retreat… without telling his wife. What happened transformed his life, and he's so grateful he took the leap. In this episode, we talk about: – Coming out later in life (and what anxiety about being “too late” is really about) – The moment everything clicked for Doug (a spiritual calling that he thankfully listened to) – Navigating the gay world in a “second adolescence” at 84 – Consent, boundaries, and learning a whole new culture – A powerful first tantric experience that opened something spiritual – Letting go through sex, psychedelics, and self-acceptance – Becoming “Doug 2.0” — bigger, freer, and more alive than ever before. This is a unique, funny, and surprisingly moving conversation about authenticity, curiosity, and what can happen when you finally let yourself be who you are — at any age. There are about 15 minutes of bonus content with Doug -- plus FULL VIDEO of this episode, where you can see his see-through black lace shirt -- on Patreon. Today we're talking about psychedelics and how they can intersect with queerness and the journey toward authenticity. I recently went on a new(ish) bi podcast called "This Feels Bi", where I was interviewed by co-hosts Amanda Kohr and Erin Deason about one of my favorite topics. We talked about cannabis, mushrooms, ayahuasca, LSD, and more, and I got to share how these medicines have helped me on my bi journey. Included here is a 14-minute segment -- for the full interview, check out their podcast! (Link below.) Continuing on the same theme, I'm also sharing two clips from my YouTube page about a) how psychedelics are a lot closer to therapy than a party drug, and b) why integration after a psychedelic journey is even more important than the trip itself. Finally, I share some of the insights I received on a very recent medicine experience. Stay tuned for more episodes coming soon, including a 3-part series on BFF! In Part 2, Dr. Joshua Gebhardt (a licensed marriage and family therapist who specializes in working with mixed-orientation couples) turns the lens inward and shares his own personal story — growing up in a conservative Christian environment, navigating masculinity as a college athlete, entering a mixed-orientation marriage himself, and slowly coming to terms with his gay identity. He reflects on the role of religion, shame, repression, and community expectations, and how those experiences ultimately shaped both his life and his work as a therapist. We also discussed how his own experience of coming out to his wife and ultimately divorcing informs his approach with clients. This is an honest look at untangling who you were taught to be from who you truly are — and how that journey can transform the way you help others do the same. We're back! This week I sit down with Dr. Joshua Gebhardt — a licensed marriage and family therapist who specializes in mixed-orientation couples — to explore what really happens when guys come out to their wives as queer. Drawing from his doctoral research and years of clinical experience, Joshua breaks down the most common challenges couples face after disclosure, why shame and panic often dominate the early stages, and how counselors can either help or unintentionally harm these vulnerable relationships. We unpack the most common relationship outcomes (and how to know which is most likely...), the role of sexual identity (bi v. gay v. something else), how couples navigate opening up their relationship (or not), the best and worst therapy models, and what it takes to navigate authenticity, safety, and connection when everything feels at stake. Stay tuned for Part 2, coming next week, where we go deeper into Joshua's personal queer journey. You won't want to miss it. Welcome to Season 10 and the future of Two Bi Guys (By One Bi Guy)! I’m switching things up a bit, and today I’m sharing a couple of explainer videos that I recently posted to YouTube, plus important updates about the pod and my coaching practice. I will continue to interview activists, authors, artists, researchers, coaches, and others with interesting things to share about bisexuality, fluidity, gender, and the relationship spectrum on this platform, but I am also branching out and creating new types of content, and I’m experimenting with cross-pollination. Let me know what you think. If you haven’t yet checked out my YouTube page, I’d love it if you would (link below), and I hope you enjoy today’s explainers! Welcome to the season 9 finale of Two Bi Guys (By One Bi Guy)! My guest is Wade Shepard, founder of a play party called “Bi for Bi”, which takes place quarterly in New York City. We chatted about why he started a party that caters to bisexuality (and specifically offers a venue for bi men to explore openly), what the party is like, and the kinky icebreakers that get things going (human cake anyone?) – plus one of the other parties Wade facilitates, focused on gangbangs, and how sexual fluidity plays a role. We also got into Wade’s queer journey, which he described as easier than most and without much drama, and how his sexuality and masculinity co-exist. Thanks for listening to this season of Two Bi Guys, and stay tuned for more! The cadence and focus of my work is always shifting, but I plan to continue having these conversations and sharing more stories in the very near future – stay tuned. Award-winning sex and gender specialist, sex educator, and now author Laura Clarke joins me to talk about her brand-new book “Step Bi Step: The Ultimate Guide for Bisexual, Pansexual, and Queer Young People”. Written with warmth, humor, and clarity, Laura’s book fills a gap for teens just beginning to explore their sexuality — and offers parents, teachers, and anyone curious a simple, compassionate introduction to bi and other queer identities. We discuss Laura’s own “bisexual teenage montage,” how she discovered and named her attraction, and the internalized biphobia she had to unlearn. She shares why she wanted to create a resource that feels safe, inclusive, and non-patronizing — something she wished she had at 13. We also get into writing for a younger audience, balancing humor with heavy topics like biphobia and representation, and how exploring bisexuality can strengthen relationships rather than threaten them. Whether you’re a teen, a parent, or simply bi-curious at any age, this conversation offers insight, validation, and a reminder to take things one step at a time. This year marked the 25th year of BFF – and while many people do meet their best friends forever at the bi-annual event, that's not where the acronym comes from ;) The Bi F*** Fest is a twice-a-year takeover of a resort in Palm Springs by over 250 Bi+ people, and while there IS a lot of fun, sexy playtime, it's the community, openness, and acceptance that keep people coming back. This year marked my second summer BFF, so I conducted a series of short interviews with attendees. They are fascinating. I love this episode. You’ll hear Mike’s story about navigating his own queerness as he grew up in the 80s as well as his insightful thoughts on what men really need in our current climate. After that, we discussed Mike’s journey with ketamine as well as my recent plant medicine work. Enjoy! This week features part two of my chat with Aaron Hammersly, filmmaker and production executive at Disney, board member on the LA Bi+ Task Force, and outspoken advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, working especially for more inclusive representation in front of and behind the camera. In this episode, we continued discussing “Bi+ Narratives: A Guide to Authentic Representation in Storytelling”, the first comprehensive guide to portraying bi+ characters in film and television, which Aaron co-authored, diving into dozens of case studies of bi+ representation in the current film & TV landscape (like Schitt’s Creek, Heartstopper, Game of Thrones, Call Me By Your Name, Baby Reindeer, and many more), what they’re doing well, what’s backwards or harmful, what’s missing, and what we’d ideally like to see in the future. We also discussed the “manic pixie bi boy” trend, and finally we went through the guide’s test for creatives to determine if what they’re producing is authentic Bi+ representation. Thanks for listening to season 8 of Two Bi Guys (By One Bi Guy)! We’ll be back in 2025! This week I sat down with my friend Aaron Hammersly, filmmaker and production executive at Disney, board member on the LA Bi+ Task Force, and outspoken advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, working especially for more inclusive representation in front of and behind the camera. Earlier this year, Aaron co-authored Re-Write the Bi-Line’s “Bi+ Narratives: A Guide to Authentic Representation in Storytelling”, the first comprehensive guide to portraying bi+ characters in film and television. In this IN-PERSON (!!) interview, we talked about Aaron’s queer journey; “the social insidious nature of biphobia and bi erasure”; why it’s difficult to represent queerness within the major studio system and in our current climate; the costs and benefits of being out at work for writers, producers, and other creatives; why it’s unfair and unproductive when writers’ rooms fill a “diversity slot” instead of valuing diverse identities and experiences across the board; and how Aaron got involved with “Still Bisexual”, “Rewrite the Bi-Line”, and co-author Christina Fialho in order to write the Bi+ Narratives Guide. We then dove into the recommendations in the guide (like “if the audience does not know if the character is bi+, we cannot change the narrative for bi+ people”, and “expand opportunities and empower new voices”), and we began to discuss case studies of bi+ representation in the current film & TV landscape. Stay tuned for more with Aaron in next week’s season finale when we continue going through the guide! To get fired up and ready to go for the upcoming Nov. 5 election (and because I was behind on editing the next episode…), today I sat down again with our bi stepfather, RJ Aguiar, to talk politics! We discussed the importance of voting, especially for queer people, and what we’re doing in the final two weeks to support the causes we care about (mostly: democracy!). This episode features the second half of my interview with Mark Cusack (he/they), founder of the support site "Not Defining" (a space for anyone struggling with their sexuality, gender, or identity), ICF Certified Integrative Coach, and LGBTQ+ mentor. In this section, we discussed asexuality and the ace spectrum, what’s so special about dating couples, how queerness intersects with neurodivergence, Mark's drag persona “Marco Fabulasio”, and we each said "bye bye" to something we'd like to do away with in queer culture. This week I sat down with Mark Cusack (he/they), founder of the support site "Not Defining" (a space for anyone struggling with their sexuality, gender, or identity), and we discussed why even under the Bi+ umbrella, many queer people are moving away from fixed labels and definitions of their identities. Mark is also an ICF Certified Integrative Coach and LGBTQ+ mentor, and we chatted about how his journey with content creation led to his new coaching practice (similar to my own story!). Happy end of Bi+ Visibility Month! This episode includes the second part of my chat with Lewis Oakley – a Bi+ Activist in the UK, co-host of the "Bisexual Brunch" podcast, and author of a new book, “Bisexuality: The Basics” from Jessica Kingsley Publishers – and spoiler alert, the title of this episode is ironic, as Lewis argues that you can't go into these things with a game plan, and we discussed how to get comfortable with that uncertainty. Welcome back to Bi+ book season! We're picking up right where we left off, interviewing 4 more Bi+ authors about their new bisexual-themed books, and this week I’m so excited to reunite with J.R. Yussuf to discuss his new book, Dear Bi Men: A Black Man’s Perspective on Power, Consent, Breaking Down Binaries, and Combating Erasure. J.R. was one of the first ever guests on this podcast, and it was amazing to hear how much has evolved – for both of us – since that first interview. It's the final interview (for real!) in this series on Bi+ married men. But first -- I'm starting a coaching practice! I specialize in helping LGBT+, queer, questioning, and non-monogamous people navigate their identity and relationships, but I can coach you in any area of your life in which you feel stuck. For the first 20 minutes of this episode, I give an overview of my new practice, what coaching is and isn't, how I can help you create awareness and meaningful change, and how to sign up for a free intro call if you're interested. (TLDR: visit my website) After that, enjoy an interview with Rene (aka Nelson), another subject in my book, Bisexual Married Men: Stories of Relationships, Acceptance, and Authenticity (out now), back on Two Bi Guys for the second time. Rene's story is unique and layered, but it also features common threads that many Bi+ men have experienced – though we often feel like we’re alone. Here's the last interview in my series on Bi+ married men. (Or maybe the penultimate! I'm still waiting to hear back from someone. I'll do a wrap-up episode either way.) This week I interviewed Austin, aka "Quentin" in my book, Bisexual Married Men: Stories of Relationships, Acceptance, and Authenticity (out now) -- back on Two Bi Guys for the second time (first time was season 2!) with lots of updates and new insights. Austin's story is unique and layered, perhaps even more layered than any other (and I've learned so much from peeling back those layers), but it also features common threads that many Bi+ men have experienced – though we often feel like we’re alone. There are 18 minutes of bonus content with Austin, plus full video of the entire interview, on my Patreon! Thanks for listening! This week I interviewed Nana, another subject in my book, Bisexual Married Men: Stories of Relationships, Acceptance, and Authenticity (out now). I finally got to interview Eliot Schrefer, author of "Queer Ducks (And Other Animals): The Natural World of Animal Sexuality", after picking up his book almost a year ago. The book focuses on scientific research into queerness in animals, which is much more common than most people think. Because sexuality has been viewed as so binary for many decades, scientists often observed same-sex sexual activity between animals and then labeled them as "gay", leading to arguments of animal homosexuality as an evolutionary byproduct, a mutation, a mistake, or a mystery. But the more these animals are studied, the more scientists are realizing that there are very few "gay" animals -- most of them are actually bisexual. In this interview, we discussed how that plays out, why bisexuality can actually be evolutionarily advantageous (the "bisexual advantage"), how different species have sex for different reasons and with different results, the complex social structures among different animals groups and how sex affects them, how certain animal behaviors can be instructive for humans, the concept of animals having queer sex without having or needing a queer "identity", why it's challenging to do and publish research about animal queerness, and how all of this information has affected Eliot's queer journey -- and what he hopes this knowledge can do for the next generation. Check out my Patreon for 20 extra minutes of bonus content in which we chatted about animals that defy the gender binary (not necessarily "trans" animals, because we can't ask them about their identity, but intersex animals and specific species that have to ability to change from male-to-female or female-to-male) as well as animals that have sexual or familial bonds that reflect our concept of polyamory as opposed to monogamy. In a human culture where queerness, gender fluidity, and polyamory are often stigmatized as "unnatural", these animals prove otherwise. Thanks for listening! We discussed Ben's realization that he hadn't cried in years and had to teach himself how again (and how this was related to coming out as bisexual), the science of tears and the latest research on crying, how crying affects our social development and connections with other people, how we change when we cry, why our culture values NOT crying and what happens when we suppress tears, why men cry less than women and how expressing authentic emotions often conflicts with traditional masculinity (and how to overcome that), why tears are and have historically been important for the queer community, and why crying is necessary to build a better society. There are 15 minutes of bonus material available on Patreon in which we dove deeper into the intersection of crying and queerness (as well as other intersections), discussed how "crocodile tears" can be weaponized to cause harm, and learned why we should believe people when they cry -- even if their reasoning is unsound. Bi+ people tend to look at gender differently than most, and many of us are working toward more gender equality, especially in romantic partnerships. That's why this week I'm excited to share my interview with Dr. Kate Mangino, a gender expert whose debut book, "Equal Partners: Improving Gender Equality at Home", looks at gender imbalances in our personal lives and what we can do about it. We chatted about the current landscape of domestic equality, how couples often split physical and emotional/cognitive labor, why women more often than not bear the brunt of the workload, how same-gender couples sometimes divide responsibilities differently (often because they are forced to write new scripts for themselves), how inequality can hurt men even (or especially) if they're doing "less work", what causes certain people to reflect on gender roles while others never think twice, what true equal partnerships look like (hint: equal responsibilities are not necessarily identical responsibilities), how to get there with your partner through communication, routines, and community support, how to raise kids who will grow up wanting to be equal partners themselves, and what to do when you WANT to fall into gendered roles sometimes. In bonus material on Patreon, we continued talking about balancing gender parity with individual strengths and weaknesses, the importance of community in supporting equal partnerships, and how to actually find a partner who wants equality in relationships. Vaneet is back, and since his last visit to Two Bi Guys, he wrote his first book, "Bisexual Men Exist: A Handbook for Bisexual, Pansexual and M-Spec Men" -- available now wherever books are sold! We chatted about the process of researching, writing, and promoting his book before diving into its contents: Bi+ representation in media, coming out, dating and relationships, M-Spec intersectionality, what "M-Spec" means and why Vaneet wanted to use an "agnostic" term like that in his book's title, how queerness crosses over between sexuality and gender, how to find pride in a Bi+ or M-Spec identity, and much, much more. If you've listened to this podcast before, you probably already believe that Bi+ men exist, but in Vaneet's book, this is the BEGINNING of the conversation, not the ultimate message. We exist, AND once we get beyond convincing people of this basic truth, there's so much more to discuss and learn about our community. Listen for an in-depth, free-flowing, true Bi+ 2.0 conversation, featuring two bi guys! There are over 25 minutes of bonus content with Vaneet on my new Patreon -- we chatted more about dating and the huge variety of relationship styles among the Bi+ community, why certain relationships can be considered a success even if they eventually end, Bi+ invisibility in mental and sexual health research, intersectionality with a focus on the asexual and aromantic spectrums, and more about the challenges of writing Bi+ books in general and what we’d like to see more of in the Bi+ activist space. I finally got to interview Jessica Fern, author of one of my favorite books, "Polysecure"! I've been reading and re-reading this book for a couple years now, and it has helped me enormously in navigating polyamory and understanding how my own attachment style might affect various partnerships. In this interview, we discussed Jessica's bi identity and poly journey, why the intersection between polyamory and attachment theory is so important, the SPECTRUM of attachment styles (rather than four distinct categories, as it is often framed), why monogamy has been seen as a cultural ideal (and how that's changing today), why non-monogamy can feel threatening to some people (and how to work through that), the SPECTRUM of boundaries and how to course-correct when we go too far in either direction, love as an infinite resource or muscle that can grow, the SPECTRUM of non-monogamous relationship styles (noticing a theme...?), pervasive poly-negativity and the importance of finding like-minded community, how transitioning from monogamy to polyamory can change your attachment style, where jealousy comes from and how to use it to deepen a relationship, and how to have secure attachment with yourself. There are five extra minutes of bonus content only on Patreon in which we continued talking about jealousy (and other things we’re taught to repress from a young age), as well as why polyamory is “relatively insecure” compared to monogamy -- and why Jessica thinks that can actually be a good thing. www.Patreon.com/RobertBrooksCohen Visit www.JessicaFern.com for info on her books, seminars/webinars, psychotherapy practice, coaching, and more.
